Sage is a herb native to the Mediterranean, belonging to theLamiaceae (the mint) family along with other herbs, such as oregano, lavender, rosemary, thyme, and basil. The herb has gray leaves up to 2.5 in long (6.4 cm) and flowers that are usually blue, purple, white or pink. Because of its unique pleasant aroma sage is often used as a fragrance in soaps and cosmetics. Its reputation as a panacea is even represented in its scientific name, Salvia officinalis, derived from the Latin word, salvere, which means to be saved. Sage leaves are grayish green in color with a silvery bloom covering. They are lance shaped and feature prominent veins running throughout. Sage is available fresh or dried in either whole, rubbed (lightly ground) or powder form.

Sage is native to countries surrounding the Mediterranean Sea and has been consumed in these regions for thousands of years. In medicinal lore, sage has one of the longest histories of use of any medicinal herb. The Greeks and Romans were said to have highly prized the many healing properties of sage. The Romans treated it as sacred and created a special ceremony for gathering sage. Both civilizations used it as a preservative for meat, a tradition that continued until the beginning of refrigeration. What these cultures knew from experience, that sage could help to reduce spoilage, is now being confirmed by science, which has isolated the herb s numerous terpene antioxidants.

sage is rich in antioxidants (apigenin, diosmetin, and luteolin) and important nutrients, such as vitamin K. In fact, sage has been considered somewhat of a panacea (solution or remedy for all difficulties or diseases) throughout history because of its wide range of uses in cooking and medicine.

7. Treating Alzheimer s disease
Taking sage may help improve memory and information processing among people who suffer from mildAlzheimer s disease. Research published in the Journal of Clinical Pharmacy and Therapeutics concluded that S. officinalis may help reduce agitation of patients, but this claim still requires further research.

8. Improving memory
A 50 microl dose of sage essential oil significantly improved immediate word recall in a study of more than twenty people published in the journal Pharmacological Biochemical Behavior. The study authors wrote (these results) represent the first systematic evidence that Salvia is capable of acute modulation of cognition in healthy young adults.

9. Anti inflammatory
Researchers at the University of Vienna, Austria published a study in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology suggesting that Salvia officinalis has important anti inflammatory properties.. The team had been investigating the properties of herbs used in traditional Austrian medicine.

10. Helps diabetes type 2 patients
A team at the Research Institute of Medicinal Plants in Iran found that Salvia officinalis leaf extract has anti hyperglycemic and lipid profile improving effects in hyperlipidemic type 2 diabetic patients. In other words, sage is good at lowering cholesterol and triglyceride levels in patients with diabetes type 2. The study was published in the journal Complementary Therapies in Medicine.
