Amazing Animal Data

Flies eat by vomiting up something they've eaten previously so that the chemicals in their vomit can start to dissolve the new meal. When it's sloppy, they suck it all up again. That's why it's a really bad idea to eat anything a fly's been sitting on!

Geckos and centipedes both eat cockroaches.

Geckos have no eyelids – they lick their eyeballs to clean them!

Geckos have transparent eyelids which are permanently closed but allow the gecko to see anyway.

Goliath birdeating spiders can grow to the size of a dinner plate and kill small birds.

Head lice suck blood for about 45 seconds every 2–3 hours, but they can go without a meal for up to two days if they are between heads – on a comb, towel or pillow.

Horses often chew at fly eggs and maggots on their legs and end up swallowing them, so have a stomach full of crawling maggots.

If a lizard loses its tail, it can grow a new one.

If a rat didn't keep chewing, its lower teeth would eventually grow through its top jaw and up into the roof of its mouth.

If an octopus loses a tentacle it can grow a new one.
